New York Mets’ Casino Project Moves Forward with City Council Approval

The long-held goal of Steve Cohen to construct a casino next to Citi Field has advanced significantly. The conversion of a 50-acre parking lot into a multi-use development was made possible by the New York City Council’s 41-2 approval of a significant zoning modification.

The proposed project, called Metropolitan Park, will provide the Queens community with a 25-acre public park, dining options, retail establishments, bike lanes, and a casino. The New York Mets and Hard Rock International are working together on the project, which could be a significant milestone for Hard Rock’s owner, the Seminole Tribe of Florida. This would be the tribe’s first land-based operation in New York if it were successful.

Jobs, Infrastructure, and Community Growth

Local leaders see this project as a game-changer for the community. Councilman Francisco Moya, a key supporter of the initiative, highlighted its economic impact: “This project is about more than building a sports and entertainment park. It’s about creating meaningful job opportunities with 100% union jobs, investing back into our community, and elevating our local economy to unprecedented heights.”

The plan also includes infrastructure upgrades, such as improvements to a nearby subway station and surrounding roadways. Since the site was previously designated as a public park, zoning adjustments were necessary before moving forward.

Mets owner Steve Cohen, who has championed the casino plan for years, welcomed the approval. “Metropolitan Park will deliver 25 acres of vibrant public park space, 23,000 well-paying union jobs, and much-needed transit upgrades,” he said. “It’s time the world’s greatest borough gets the investment it deserves.”

The casino license bidding process, which started in 2021, is nearing its conclusion. The New York State Gaming Commission is expected to grant three licenses by year’s end. Two are likely to go to existing racinos in the New York City area, while one will be awarded to a new development.

Several competitors are vying for the final spot, including Wynn’s Hudson Yards proposal, as well as bids from Bally’s, MGM Resorts, and other major gaming companies. With zoning approval secured, Cohen’s project is now a strong contender in this high-stakes competition.
