Bangkok Chon Buri Chiang Mai and Phuket Chosen for Thailand Casino Project

A special committee overseeing Thailand’s entertainment complex project has selected Bangkok, Chon Buri, Chiang Mai, and Phuket as the first four locations for the initiative. The 500-billion-baht project aims to attract at least 50 million visitors each year and generate 40,000 jobs, according to a report from the Bangkok Post.

Each complex will feature a five-star hotel, a shopping mall, an amusement park, a sports arena, a convention center, and an exhibition hall. Less than 10% of the space in each development will be allocated for casino operations.

The Entertainment Complex Bill, which outlines the framework for these projects, was set to be presented at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday. However, the Ministry of Finance postponed the discussion to allow for public feedback, which will continue until Friday through an online platform.

Criticism has surfaced from various groups, including the Stop Gambling Foundation, which argues that the bill lacks strong safeguards to prevent young people from developing gambling habits. Concerns from protest groups have also contributed to delays in finalizing the legislation.

As Thailand moves forward with the project, the debate over the impact of casinos and gambling regulations is expected to continue.
