SPGA Rejects New Jersey’s Proposed Sweepstakes Gaming Ban

Assembly Bill 5447, a proposed law that would outlaw sweepstakes gambling in New Jersey, has drawn considerable opposition from the Social and Promotional Games Association (SPGA). The group asked lawmakers to oppose the legislation in a public statement, arguing that a regulatory framework that guarantees monitoring, licensing, and taxation would be preferable.

The SPGA warned that the law goes against New Jersey’s progressive gaming attitude and denounced it as a “reckless attempt to ban sweepstakes.” Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese’s earlier regulation approach, which sought to align sweepstakes with other regulated gaming businesses, is directly undermined by the measure, the group stressed.

Defending Innovation in Gaming

New Jersey has long been a leader in gaming industry innovation, and the SPGA argues that this reputation should not be replaced by outdated prohibitions. The association stated, “New Jersey’s forward-thinking approach should continue, not be replaced by outdated prohibition.”

In addition to opposing the bill, the SPGA reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe and engaging digital entertainment environment for players. The group highlighted the efforts of its members in driving innovation while prioritizing consumer protection.

“Our members take pride in driving innovation and providing safe, engaging digital entertainment to New Jersey consumers,” the SPGA stated.

The organization also stressed its dedication to collaborating with policymakers to ensure that millions of Americans can continue to enjoy legal and regulated gaming experiences.

Meanwhile, New Jersey lawmakers are also reviewing a separate proposal to reduce penalties for underage gambling. According to an Associated Press report, legislators are considering replacing criminal charges for individuals under 21 with fines instead of legal prosecution.

As the debate over gaming laws continues, the SPGA remains firm in its mission to protect responsible gaming practices while encouraging smart regulations that support the industry’s growth.
