In an effort to protect younger viewers and limit access to prohibited betting websites, YouTube is implementing additional filters on content related to gambling. Links, logos, photos, and vocal references to gambling websites that do not comply with local laws or do not have YouTube or Google clearance will no longer be permitted by creators as of March 19, 2025.
Following the Supreme Court’s 2018 ruling, online sports betting has become more popular in the United States, which has led to an increase in content that promotes betting techniques. As millions of people watch, worries about gambling addiction and deceptive advertising have increased, causing YouTube to act.
New Age Restrictions and Policy Updates
The platform already prohibits linking to external sites that violate its guidelines, but the latest update adds stricter rules. Videos promoting online casinos will now face age restrictions, preventing users under 18 or those not logged in from accessing them.
YouTube spokesperson Boot Bullwinkle confirmed the policy changes, stating: “We’ve strengthened our policies that prohibit content directing viewers to unapproved gambling websites or applications. We will also begin age-restricting content that promotes online casinos.”
Additionally, the platform will remove videos that claim “guaranteed returns” on gambling, even if linked to approved sites. This aims to prevent misleading content that could exploit vulnerable audiences.
YouTube has a history of cracking down on harmful misinformation. In recent years, it has removed content containing false claims about vaccines, abortion, and eating disorders. The platform also introduced transparency rules requiring creators to disclose AI-generated content that could mislead viewers.
This latest move seeks to close loopholes that previously allowed indirect gambling promotions. While enforcing content moderation at scale remains a challenge, YouTube is committed to applying the new rules consistently, ensuring a safer experience for its users.
