Paf, a gaming operator under the jurisdiction of the Åland regional government, has seen its statutory loss limitations further tightened. Since enacting universal constraints, the company has gradually enhanced its approach, and in 2022, it included age-specific limitations.
As of March 4, the maximum loss for participants aged 25 and over in a 12-month period is €16,000 ($17,070), down from €17,500 in 2023. Instead of €8,000, younger players between the ages of 20 and 24 are now subject to a €6,000 restriction. However, those between the ages of 18 and 19 are still subject to the present €1,800 annual cap.
These limitations are applicable to all forms of gambling on the Paf platform. Players cannot go beyond the operator’s required cap, even though they are free to set more stringent personal limits.
Paf CEO Christer Fahlstedt emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable gaming. “We want to be a sustainable entertainment company for our customers, for our employees and for our owners,” he stated. “We are now taking the next step towards more sustainable revenues.”
A Long-Term Goal of Lower Limits
Paf claims to be the only international gambling operator enforcing mandatory loss limits. The company remains committed to reducing them further, with a long-term goal of setting the cap for players over 25 at €8,000 annually.
Historically, loss limits were much higher. In 2019, players could lose up to €30,000 per year. Fahlstedt acknowledged the challenges of lowering limits but stressed the importance of gradual reductions. “We are setting a standard for responsible gaming that is increasingly difficult for other companies to follow,” he said. “We haven’t reached where we want to be yet… but we need to make the reductions at a pace we can manage.”
Additionally, Paf continues to advocate for centralized deposit limits across the industry. The operator believes linking these limits to self-exclusion registers would enhance responsible gambling.
“Centralised deposit limits that customers can set themselves and that apply across all gaming operators would significantly improve responsible gaming,” said Daniela Johansson, Paf’s deputy CEO and chief responsibility officer.
