Gambling Revenue in Sweden Up 2.65% to $2.62 Billion in 2024 as Online Betting Grew

Sweden’s gambling industry saw revenue grow by 2.65% in 2024, reaching SEK27.85 billion ($2.62 billion), according to Spelinspektionen. Online gambling remained the largest segment, pulling in SEK17.84 billion ($1.68 billion), a 5% increase from the previous year.

The fourth quarter was the most profitable, generating SEK7.61 billion ($715.44 million), up 7.6% from the previous year and 14.3% higher than Q3. Online gambling alone brought in SEK4.63 billion, a 6.2% increase. State lotteries and slot machines saw an 18.5% jump, reaching SEK1.71 billion. Non-profit games and national lotteries contributed SEK1.13 billion, reflecting a 5.2% rise. Land-based commercial gaming also grew, reaching SEK64 million, an 8.6% increase.

Casino Cosmopol faced a sharp decline in revenue due to multiple location closures in early 2024. Its revenue dropped 66.3% to SEK160 million ($15.04 million) for the year. The trend continued in Q4, where revenue fell to SEK31 million, also down 66.3% year-over-year.

State lotteries and slot machines generated SEK5.72 billion ($538.27 million), up 2.2%. Non-profit games and national lotteries grew by 2.6% to SEK3.70 billion ($348.84 million). Land-based commercial gaming, which includes restaurant casinos, rose 4% to SEK237 million ($22.28 million). In contrast, community games and hall bingo reported a 3.5% decline, bringing in SEK196 million ($18.43 million).

Casino Cosmopol may soon disappear altogether. The Swedish government proposed shutting it down entirely, which would require the closure of its last remaining casino in Stockholm by January 1, 2026. Spelinspektionen has pushed back against the plan, warning that closing regulated land-based casinos could push more players toward unlicensed gambling platforms.
