By highlighting the importance of Special Class Business Process Outsourcing (SCBPO) firms to the Philippine economy, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp (Pagcor) has reaffirmed its dedication to helping them. The legal presence of offshore internet gaming operators, formerly known as POGOs, ceased in December 2023, and this follows their departure.
SCBPOs offer business-to-business services to organizations in a variety of industries, including offshore gaming. Alejandro Tengco, the chairman and CEO of Pagcor, praised their efforts at a meeting with international chambers of business.
“We recognize the immense contribution of the SCBPOs in creating thousands of jobs for our countrymen, and we thank our foreign investors for recognizing the unique talent of our workers who provide excellent outsourced services for them,” said Tengco.
In contrast to conventional BPO organizations, SCBPOs focus on assisting reputable gaming businesses overseas. Tengco claims that these companies do not operate in the betting or gaming industry, but rather offer back-office, marketing, graphic design, accounting, and human resources services.
“We also make sure that the SCBPOs are not directly engaged in gaming operations such as taking or soliciting bets,” he clarified.
Currently, SCBPOs employ nearly 5,000 local workers, with 95% of their workforce required to be Filipino. Pagcor sees significant growth potential in this industry and aims to expand its impact on job creation.
However, the gaming regulator has also warned against offshore gaming firms misrepresenting themselves as BPO providers. In November 2023, Pagcor urged authorities to treat such cases as a serious concern.
