According to January gaming income data issued by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement, there was a little decrease from the same time previous year. At $553.9 million, the state’s overall gaming revenue from racetracks, casinos, and internet platforms represented a 0.9% decrease from the previous year.
Last month, $210.1 million in casino profits were made at New Jersey’s nine casino resorts, a 2.6% increase over January 2024. Of that sum, $145.4 million came from slot machines and $64.6 million from table games.
The state’s online gaming industry grew further, achieving a $221.6 million win, a 20.9% increase from the previous year.
However, sports wagering revenue saw a notable decline. The state reported $122.2 million in sports betting revenue, which was 28.4% lower than January 2024. The majority of these wagers, $118.5 million, came from online betting, while retail sportsbooks generated $3.6 million.
Total gaming-related tax revenue reached $62.1 million for the month.
Legislators Consider Decriminalizing Underage Gambling
In addition to gaming revenue updates, New Jersey lawmakers are discussing changes to laws concerning underage gambling. According to an Associated Press report, legislators are considering a bill that would decriminalize gambling under 21, shifting penalties from criminal charges to civil fines.
Under the proposed changes:
- First-time offenses would result in a $500 fine.
- Second violations would lead to a $1,000 fine.
- Subsequent offenses would incur a $2,000 fine.
Revenue from these fines would fund compulsive gambling prevention, education, and treatment programs, as outlined in the AP report.
The proposal marks a shift in how the state approaches underage gambling, aiming to reduce criminal penalties while investing in responsible gaming initiatives.
