Churchill Downs has officially opened Owensboro Racing & Gaming, a new historical horseracing (HHR) and entertainment venue in western Kentucky. This facility aims to enhance the region’s racing industry while providing financial support for Ellis Park Racing and Gaming’s summer meet in Henderson.
Strengthening Kentucky’s Racing Industry
Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen emphasized the venue’s significance, stating, “Today marks an exciting milestone for our company as we expand our footprint in western Kentucky and further strengthen our commonwealth’s signature horse racing industry.” He also highlighted the economic benefits, adding, “Owensboro’s newest entertainment destination will drive new tourism, entertainment and economic opportunities in eastern Daviess County.”
This new addition marks Churchill Downs’ seventh HHR facility in Kentucky, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding its presence in the state. The project, which cost $100 million, brings state-of-the-art gaming and wagering options to the area.
Owensboro Racing & Gaming features 600 historical racing machines (HRMs), a retail sportsbook, simulcast wagering, and multiple food and beverage options. The venue offers a modern entertainment experience while supporting Kentucky’s long-standing horse racing tradition.
The launch follows Churchill Downs’ recent decision to halt retail sports betting at its Louisville track. The company cited low profitability, explaining that “98% of sports betting occurs on mobile platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings, making it unfeasible to continue retail betting.” Despite this, Churchill Downs remains active in the gaming industry and continues to expand its offerings.
Recently, the Virginia Racing Commission, the New York State Gaming Commission, and the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission granted Churchill Downs new gaming licenses, reinforcing the company’s ongoing growth strategy.
