UKGC Announces New Gambling Regulations for Consumer Protection and Transparency

Significant improvements have been implemented by the UK gaming Commission (UKGC) with the goal of strengthening consumer control and improving transparency in the gaming industry. The continuous efforts to improve consumer protections and guarantee that gambling stays fair and responsible include these new rules.

Consumer empowerment is the subject of one of the main modifications to the Commission’s Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP). Gambling establishments must ask patrons to establish a deposit limit prior to making their initial deposit as of October 31, 2025. Players will be able to better control their spending thanks to this. Customers will also be able to quickly evaluate and modify their limitations whenever they want.

These measures build on existing best practices and will now be implemented across the entire industry. Operators must also send reminders every six months, encouraging consumers to reassess their deposit limits and review their account details.

Clearer Protection of Customer Funds

Another important change is that gambling businesses must clearly state in their terms and conditions whether customer funds are protected in the event of insolvency. Operators will be required to specify the level of protection and the methods they use to safeguard customer funds. This information must be provided when a customer makes their first deposit.

The UKGC’s reforms are in line with the 2023 White Paper, “High Stakes: Gambling Reform for the Digital Age,” ensuring the industry keeps pace with evolving consumer needs and technology.

The UKGC also made adjustments to the LCCP to prepare for the introduction of a statutory levy by the government. Expected to come into effect on 6 April 2025, this levy will replace the current annual financial contributions made by operators to research, prevention, and treatment organisations. These changes are part of broader reforms that aim to create a safer gambling environment for consumers.

In a statement, Tim Miller, Executive Director for research and policy at the UK Gambling Commission, said, “These changes illustrate our commitment to ensuring gambling is fair and open by improving consumer empowerment and choice.”
