Macau Welcomes Over 1 Million Visitors During Lunar New Year Holiday

Over 1.01 million people visited Macau in the first six days of the Lunar New Year Golden Week, indicating a significant influx of tourists. Due to the city’s continued popularity as a top vacation spot, the bulk of these visitors were from mainland China.

According to official figures, 1,010,174 visitors arrived between January 28 and February 2. However, total tourism numbers somewhat decreased when compared to the holiday season last year.

Verified statistics for the first five days revealed 821,016 arrivals, an 8.6% drop from the 2024 Lunar New Year Golden Week, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO). The Year of the Dragon celebration last year took place from February 10 to February 17.

Visitor Trends and Key Markets

Preliminary figures from Macau’s Public Security Police indicate that on February 2 alone, the city received 189,158 visitors. Despite the strong turnout, mainland arrivals between January 28 and February 2 dropped by 11.3% year-over-year, totaling 606,231.

Hong Kong visitors also contributed significantly, with 158,191 arrivals during the same period. However, this number represented a 4.4% decline compared to last year’s figures.

Lunar New Year Golden Week is one of Macau’s busiest periods, with Macau casinos, hotels, and entertainment venues seeing peak business. The holiday period, officially designated by China’s State Council, ran from January 28 to February 4 this year, marking the start of the Year of the Snake.

While the overall decline in visitor numbers presents a challenge, Macau remains a top destination for mainland tourists. Industry stakeholders will be closely monitoring the final figures to assess the full impact of this year’s celebrations.
