The VGC would be in charge of casinos, sports betting, and other legal gaming operations, while the state lottery would continue to operate independently.
The commission would be in charge of licensing, enforcing the legislation, and making sure state laws are followed. Additionally, it would have the power to look into infractions and enforce rules meant to preserve the integrity and transparency of the sector.
Why Supporters Back the Proposal
Advocates believe a centralized regulatory body would enhance consumer protections and strengthen oversight. With Virginia’s gambling sector expanding rapidly, an independent commission could provide better accountability and streamline industry management.
The state’s gambling landscape has evolved significantly in recent years. New casinos are being developed in cities like Bristol, Portsmouth, and Norfolk. Meanwhile, the sports betting market has grown, with over 15 operators now active in the state. However, efforts to legalize online casinos stalled earlier in the legislative session.
If passed, the bill will change gaming laws to conform to the updated regulatory framework and transfer staff from current agencies to the new commission. Redefining legal words, modernizing punishments, and getting rid of out-of-date regulations are some of the suggested improvements.
The House Committee on General Laws is presently reviewing the measure. It will proceed to the full House of Delegates for additional discussion if it advances. The proposed commission seeks to guarantee equitable operations and responsible gaming practices as Virginia’s gambling sector grows.
