Lawmakers in Missouri are considering allowing video gambling machines at pubs and petrol stations. Experts considered the financial and regulatory ramifications during meetings in the House Emerging Issues Committee, according to a recent St. Louis Post-Dispatch report.
An estimate suggests that legalizing these devices might bring in more than $343 million for the state per year. A unbiased financial analysis, however, expresses worries about the possible effects on Missouri’s riverboat casinos. The research cites Illinois, where slot machine operations increased by about 900% but casino income fell by 15% within five years of identical gaming machines being legalized.
Additionally, the analysis warns that Missouri could see a reduction in casino tax revenue and admission fees paid to local governments in dock cities.
The Future of Gambling in Missouri
The state is already moving toward an expanded gambling market. Missouri voters approved Amendment 2 in the last election, officially paving the way for a legal sports betting industry. Under this amendment, a regulated betting market must be operational by December.
Missouri Gaming Commission Chair Jan Zimmerman remains optimistic, stating that she expects wagering to begin by summer. She emphasized the importance of a well-regulated industry, saying, “The Missouri Gaming Commission is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the process, the integrity of gambling within the state of Missouri, and so we really can’t afford to have anyone that’s inappropriate, or, you know, shouldn’t be involved in the gaming industry.”
As the debate over video gambling machines continues, lawmakers must weigh potential economic benefits against the risks of shifting revenue away from established casinos.
