Governor Ron DeSantis Aims to Tighten Rules on Citizen-Led Amendments

A proposal put forth by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has the potential to drastically change the way residents amend the state constitution. This initiative seeks to tighten restrictions on ballot referendums, making it considerably more difficult for voters to propose legislative changes, according to a CNN report.

Opponents contend that these limitations may significantly decrease the public’s capacity to shape state legislation. Potential casino ventures, such as any intentions former President Donald Trump may have for a casino in Miami, may also be impacted by the change.

Impact on Florida’s Gaming Industry

Legal experts believe the proposed changes could further solidify the Seminole Tribe’s control over gambling in Florida. The new restrictions would make it even more difficult for outside operators, including Trump, to establish casinos in the state.

Daniel Wallach, founder of a law firm specializing in gaming regulations, described the proposal as “unprecedented for a state as populous as Florida.” He noted that limiting citizen-led amendments could impact competition in both casino gambling and sports betting markets.

Any expansion of gambling is subject to voter approval through a constitutional amendment under the current Florida constitution. According to state law, any reforms must receive the support of at least 60% of voters.
