Bangkok Port is being considered by the Thai government as a possible location for a casino and other huge entertainment complex. The port’s distinctive features, including its large land area, picturesque river vistas, and potential for development into a yacht marina, were recently emphasized by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.
Bangkok Port Among Top Contenders
Speaking to the Bangkok Post, Jungrungreangkit emphasized the port’s viability for hosting such a complex. However, he clarified that final decisions on locations would rest with a national committee. The Ministry of Transport, while involved in feasibility studies, does not have the authority to determine specific sites.
The idea gained momentum after Thailand’s cabinet approved the Entertainment Complex Bill two weeks ago, which aims to legalize and regulate casinos. The proposed legislation outlines a 30-year licensing period for casinos, with an option to extend for another decade. To qualify, each complex would require a minimum investment of THB100 billion (approximately $2.88 billion).
The bill envisions entertainment complexes as more than just gaming hubs. These facilities would also include hotels, conference centers, and tourist attractions, creating diverse business opportunities.
Thailand’s Council of State is currently reviewing the bill and has 50 days to finalize recommendations before it moves to the National Assembly for debate. Meanwhile, Jungrungreangkit mentioned plans to form a committee to assess the feasibility of entertainment complexes in areas like ports, indicating that multiple locations are under consideration.
International casino giants are already showing interest in Thailand’s emerging casino market. Melco Resorts & Entertainment Ltd, led by Chairman and CEO Lawrence Ho Yau Lung, recently opened a representative office in Bangkok. The move signals the company’s intent to explore opportunities in the country’s potential casino industry.
While the Entertainment Complex Bill still faces legislative hurdles, Thailand’s push to liberalize casinos has attracted global attention. If approved, the initiative could transform the nation’s tourism landscape and attract billions in foreign investment.
