December Gaming Results Show Mixed Trends in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s gaming market closed out 2024 with impressive results, achieving a record-breaking $223.7 million in iGaming revenue for December. According to data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB), the new figure surpassed November’s record by over $23 million, marking a 35.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

Overall gaming revenue in Pennsylvania reached $533.1 million for December, a slight dip of 0.2% year-over-year. Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course emerged as the top performer, bringing in $99.3 million, a 31.3% rise compared to the previous year. Valley Forge Casino Resort and Parx Casino followed with $87.6 million and $54.1 million, respectively, though both reported year-over-year declines.

Retail slot machines led revenue generation across the state, totaling $202.1 million in December, despite a 2.7% drop from the prior year. Meanwhile, iGaming slots experienced remarkable growth, climbing 40.5% to contribute $164.3 million. iGaming table games also posted gains, with revenue increasing by 24.2% year-over-year to $56.9 million.

Sports betting, however, faced significant challenges. Revenue from sports wagering plummeted 69.8%, ending the month at $21.9 million. Valley Forge Casino managed to lead the category with $14.1 million, though its revenue declined by over 64% from December 2023. Other properties, such as Parx Casino, Mohegan Pennsylvania, and Rivers Casino Philadelphia, also reported sharp declines in sports wagering revenue, ranging from 72.9% to 91.6%.

Among individual properties, Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course stood out for its iGaming performance, generating $86.4 million, an increase of 41.8%. It also led iGaming revenue across all three game categories. However, not all properties reported growth; Harrah’s Philadelphia, Mohegan Pennsylvania, and Wind Creek Bethlehem saw declines in iGaming revenue year-over-year.

Parx Casino maintained its position as the leader in slot machine revenue, reporting $31.5 million, though this represented a 2.8% decline. Wind Creek Bethlehem led in retail table game revenue, which increased by 3.6% to $21.6 million.

In the sports betting space, operators like DraftKings and FanDuel saw modest gains. DraftKings reported a 3.1% increase in revenue to $1.9 million, while FanDuel grew by 1.4%, earning $565,800. Underdog Fantasy outperformed others with a 58.5% revenue increase, totaling $215,900 for the month.
