Detroit Casino Revenue Drops in December 2024 vs 2023

Detroit’s three casinos reported a combined revenue of $109.6 million for December 2024, according to data from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). This reflects a 5.7% drop compared to the same month in 2023, with declines in both table games and retail sports betting revenues.

Table games and slots contributed the most, generating $109.3 million in revenue for the month. However, this was still 1.9% lower than the previous year. Retail sports betting showed a sharper decline, with adjusted gross receipts (QAGR) falling by 94.2% year-over-year to $280,000.

The sports betting handle for December 2024 totaled $19.8 million, significantly lower than the $30.4 million recorded in December 2023. Compared to November 2024, sports betting QAGR also dropped by 85.6%.

Among the casinos, MotorCity and Hollywood Casino at Greektown managed slight increases in their December sports betting QAGR, with gains of $342,600 and $88,400, respectively. Meanwhile, MGM Grand Detroit experienced a $150,000 decrease in sports betting QAGR but was the only property to report growth in table games and slot revenue. MGM’s total gaming revenue for December reached $51.2 million, a 1.3% increase from the previous year. MotorCity reported $33 million in revenue, down 4.8%, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown saw $25.1 million, a 4.1% decline.

For the full year of 2024, the three casinos collectively generated $1.29 billion, up 4.3% from 2023. Slots remained the largest revenue source, bringing in $1.03 billion. Table games contributed nearly $251 million, while retail sports betting accounted for $9.7 million, a 30.6% decline from the previous year.

In terms of market share for retail sports betting, MGM led with 47%, followed by MotorCity at 30% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown with 23%.
