Massachusetts Gaming Industry Reports Strong November Performance

The gaming figures for November 2024 released by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) show remarkable increases in casino and sports betting. The state reported $777.8 million in sports wagering handling and $100.8 million in casino gross gaming revenue (GGR).

Sports Betting, Online Dominates the Market

Online sports wagering played a significant role, contributing $764.1 million to the total handle, while retail venues accounted for $13.8 million. The overall handle showed a robust 17.2% increase compared to November 2023 and rose by 3.9% from October 2024.

Revenue from sports betting reached $80.5 million, reflecting a substantial 48.8% growth year-over-year and a 50% month-over-month surge. Tax revenue from sports wagering amounted to $16.05 million for the month.

Encore Boston Harbor led retail sports betting with $7.3 million in handle. However, online operators far outpaced retail, with DraftKings securing the top spot by handling $384.1 million in wagers. FanDuel followed with $225.7 million in bets. Interestingly, despite leading the market, DraftKings reported a Q3 2024 net loss of $293.7 million.

The MGC authorized an official seal for authorized operators, enabling them to use it on their platforms in an effort to increase transparency.

When sports betting and casino gaming are combined, Massachusetts’ November revenues increased by $100.8 million, for a monthly total of $181.3 million. Casino GGR increased 6.9% from October 2024 to 7.04% year over year.

The largest contributor, slot machines, produced $68.9 million in GGR, an increase of 10.7% from the previous year. Table game GGR, on the other hand, decreased marginally by 0.5% from November 2023.

Casino gaming taxes brought in $28.7 million for the state, up 8.7% from the previous year and 6.4% from the month before.

Strategic growth in sports betting and steady performance in casino gaming have been the main drivers of Massachusetts’ gaming industry’s steady rise.
