By certifying more than 1,000 employees in its GameSense responsible gaming program, MGM Resorts International has reached a noteworthy milestone in 2024. The British Columbia Lottery Corporation created GameSense, which gives employees the skills they need to encourage responsible gaming and properly instruct visitors.
Garrett Farnes, MGM’s Director of Responsible Gaming, underscored the importance of empowering employees during the training. “We want it to resonate with them, and we want to leave them empowered after these (training) sessions to make responsible gaming an integral part of their daily job duties,” Farnes stated, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

This accomplishment marks a turning point for MGM’s responsible gaming initiatives. From the program’s introduction in 2017 through 2023, approximately 350 employees were certified. By comparison, 2024 alone has seen over 1,000 certifications, reflecting MGM’s accelerated efforts.
Garrett Farnes highlighted MGM’s dedication to responsible operations, stating, “We are trying to set a precedent within the industry as to what it means to be a responsible operator.” Farnes emphasized MGM’s round-the-clock commitment to responsible gaming, setting the company apart from many other operators.
John Flynn, Senior Vice President of Global Security and Aviation at MGM, was among the first employees certified in 2017. He praised GameSense’s alignment with MGM’s long-term sustainability goals. “Programs that you can invest in, that your employees love, that the guests love, are going to integrate well into most other cultures,” Flynn explained, noting the program’s relevance as MGM expands globally.
GameSense gives staff members the tools they need to spot the warning signs of problem gambling and handle delicate situations with tact. The program has been well received by staff members, according to Stephen Martino, Senior Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at MGM.
Players can also gain practically from the initiative. Myths such as the idea that a slot machine is “due” to strike or that the result of a roulette roll is predictable are debunked by GameSense. Gamers ensure that gambling stays a fun experience by learning the game’s odds and rules.
