Google is under investigation by India’s Competition Commission (CCI) for allegedly discriminatory practices regarding real-money games on its platform. The investigation comes after online gaming company WinZO formally complained that Google had implemented restrictive measures.
When WinZO’s software was removed from the Google Play Store in 2022, the company first expressed concerns. Google rejected WinZO because of its other gaming offerings, which included puzzles, vehicle racing, and Indian carrom, even though it permits real-money games like rummy and fantasy sports. According to WinZO, this approach unjustly gave preference to some app categories while excluding others.
A letter from the CCI highlighted the issue, stating, “By granting preferential treatment to select app categories, Google effectively creates a two-tier market where some developers are accorded superior access and visibility while others are discriminated against and thus, left with a competitive disadvantage.”
Google’s selective acceptance of real-money games has created controversy in India’s booming online gaming market. Developers argue that the tech giant’s policies stifle innovation by limiting the visibility of diverse gaming apps. This exclusion can significantly hinder revenue generation and user acquisition for impacted companies.
India’s online gaming sector is expanding rapidly, with various platforms offering skill-based and casual games. However, critics claim Google’s approach disrupts fair competition, as smaller developers struggle to gain equal footing against approved competitors.
