In a single month, Indonesia took down 380,000 websites as part of its stepped-up attempts to stop online gambling. At a news conference in Jakarta, Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, highlighted the development and emphasized the government’s tough stance against illicit gaming.
Coordinated Action Against Gambling Networks
On October 20, when the new government was installed, the crackdown started. The newly created Online Gambling Eradication Desk had taken down 104,819 gambling-related websites by November 21. In order to demonstrate the government’s commitment, Minister Hafid disclosed that since early November, 651 requests to close bank accounts connected to online gambling had been made.
Bank Indonesia has also frozen 7,500 accounts associated with illegal gambling. Juda Agung, the central bank’s deputy governor, stressed that payment providers must implement fraud detection systems. “Payment service providers, both banks and non-banks, must have fraud detection systems [in place] to identify accounts used for online gambling transactions and other fraud,” Agung stated.
This sweeping campaign, under President Prabowo Subianto’s new administration, reflects Indonesia’s commitment to eradicating illegal gambling and upholding laws in the predominantly Muslim nation.
