Culinary Union Stages Civil Disobedience Action at Virgin Las Vegas

On November 21, Culinary Union 226 declared that it would be launching a civil disobedience action against Virgin Las Vegas. The action is a part of the union’s campaign to negotiate a new five-year contract that would cover more than 700 workers in the hospitality industry. The protest, which is scheduled for 5:30 PM local time, takes place at the same time as the property’s continuous, round-the-clock picket lines.

On November 15, the union started its strike, which is the first time Culinary Union employees have done so since 2002. Workers of the Golden Gate hotel in Downtown Las Vegas won a good contract after a 10-day strike in 2002.

Union Leaders Demand Fair Terms

Ted Pappageorge, Secretary-Treasurer of Culinary Union 226, emphasized the stakes of the current dispute. “The contract at Virgin Las Vegas expired on June 1, 2023, and workers are fighting for a new contract that secures a better future for their families,” he said.

Pappageorge criticized Virgin Las Vegas’ proposals as inadequate, adding, “The Virgin Las Vegas’ proposal is miles apart and is an insult to every worker.” He underscored the union’s commitment to ensuring workers receive fair wage increases, stating, “Workers at Virgin Las Vegas deserve a first-class contract… and we will win.”

The union also condemned Virgin Las Vegas for hiring temporary workers, often referred to as “scabs,” to perform essential hospitality roles during the strike.

The escalating labor action comes as Las Vegas gears up for the Formula One Grand Prix from November 21-23. This high-profile event adds pressure on Virgin Las Vegas to address the union’s demands.

The Culinary Union’s actions aim to secure better working conditions and wages, with its leadership pledging unwavering support for the striking workers. As the dispute continues, the union’s strong stance reflects its dedication to achieving a fair contract.
