Mayor Irvin Applauds Development Progress for Hollywood Casino Aurora, Opening in 2026

Richard Irvin, the mayor of Aurora, has praised the new Hollywood Casino Aurora’s development progress, which is anticipated to revolutionize the area’s gambling scene. Speaking to workers, construction managers, and local authorities, Irvin praised the prompt progress, saying, “This progress is amazing.” The $360 million project is expected to open in the first half of 2026 and is well situated on the west side of Farnsworth Avenue.

Project Highlights and Community Impact

The ambitious project includes a state-of-the-art casino, a seven-story hotel, a 12,000-square-foot event space, and a sports betting facility. Irvin emphasized the significance of the project, pointing out the three cranes visible at the site, a clear sign of the substantial advancements being made. “Keep those hands going (applause) for cranes in the air!” he encouraged the audience, highlighting the hard work of the laborers.

Craig Melby, co-founder of Viking Bros., one of the construction firms involved, shared Irvin’s enthusiasm. He described the project as “magnificent,” reflecting the collective excitement surrounding the development. Greg Moore, vice president and general manager of Hollywood Casino Aurora, also praised the progress, stating, “I think you can see how much work the men and women of Aurora have been able to get done in just a few short months.”

Penn Entertainment, the developer behind the casino, has partnered with the City of Aurora since breaking ground in November last year. The city has committed to lending up to $50 million to Penn Entertainment and has contributed $8 million worth of city-owned land for the site. The Aurora City Council previously approved $58 million in general obligation bonds to facilitate the loan and the demolition of the existing downtown casino.

The redevelopment agreement features a tax-increment financing (TIF) district. Increased property taxes generated by the new casino will help pay off the bonds, with Penn Entertainment responsible for covering any shortfalls. This strategic financing approach aims to revitalize the gaming sector in Aurora, particularly in light of declining revenues at the existing Hollywood Casino, which has faced stiff competition from newer venues.
