German poker pro Oliver Weis has continued his impressive run this year by claiming victory at the European Poker Tour (EPT) Cyprus Main Event. The 32-year-old outplayed a field of 1,284 participants in the $5,300 buy-in tournament, securing a prize of $1,030,000. This latest win adds to an already stellar 2024 for Weis, who earlier in the year won his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet.
A Year of Success
2024 has been a breakout year for Weis. Earlier this year, he earned $1,047,816 after winning the EPT Paris €10,300 buy-in in February, marking his largest career payday. His recent win in Cyprus falls just short of that top score, but it still solidifies his position as one of the top players on the circuit. This year alone, he has racked up nearly half of his total career earnings, which now stand at over $5.2 million.
In an interview with PokerStars TV’s Joe Stapleton, Weis reflected on his journey. “I’m very happy. This is a tough grind,” he said, showing relief after another long tournament battle.
The Road to Victory in Cyprus
The EPT Cyprus main event attracted a huge crowd, resulting in a total prize pool of $6,227,400. Players from all over the world competed, and only the top 191 finishers walked away with a share of the prize money. Notable names who cashed in included two-time bracelet winner Artur Martirosian, EPT champion Nicolas Chouity, and WSOP Online finalist Diogo Coelho.
Weis faced a challenging path to the top. When the final heads-up battle began, he was up against local player Tsouloftas, who had a substantial chip lead with 29,075,000, compared to Weis’ 9,425,000. But Weis stayed patient, gradually chipping away at the lead. In a key moment, he managed to pick off a multi-street bluff from Tsouloftas, shifting the momentum in his favor.
Decisive Heads-Up Play
The heads-up battle was intense, with both players showcasing skill and strategy. Weis managed to claw back from a deficit, taking the lead by getting thin value with third pair against king-high. He continued to apply pressure, eventually forcing Tsouloftas to commit his remaining 12 big blinds.

Among those who reached the final table were Timo Kamphues, who finished 9th, and Andrea Dato, the 2023 runner-up, who secured 8th place this year. The tournament showcased a mix of established talents and rising stars, highlighting the growing competitiveness of the EPT circuit.
