A Grand Farewell for a Landmark
Before the demolition, Bally Corp., which owns the property, treated spectators to a seven-minute firework and drone show, adding to the excitement of the occasion. The Tropicana’s implosion paves the way for the construction of a state-of-the-art stadium that will become the new home of the Oakland Athletics baseball team.
Steve Hill, President and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCA), reflected on the significance of the event: “It’s honoring what the Tropicana has meant to Las Vegas… Now we’re going to turn it into a new iconic location, which is very fitting for Las Vegas.”
The property closed in April, and plans are in motion for a $1.5 billion stadium with a seating capacity of 33,000 to rise on the site. John Fisher, owner of the Oakland Athletics, shared his enthusiasm for the future, saying, “Seeing those buildings come down so quickly was astounding… It made me so happy and so proud.”
Construction of the stadium is set to begin by mid-2025, with the team expected to start playing in Las Vegas by 2028. Bally’s also plans to build a new casino once the stadium is complete, ensuring that the site remains a prominent entertainment hub.
