Australia’s James Obst has claimed victory in the 2024 WPT Australia Main Event, taking home AUD $585,359. Obst took control early on Day 3 and maintained a strong lead throughout the event, never looking back. The tournament, held with an AUD $8,000 buy-in, attracted 396 entries, creating a prize pool of AUD $2,930,400 (approximately $1,995,016). The bulk of the prize money was distributed on the final day of play.
The final table action kicked off with Dillan Patel, a live satellite qualifier from Aspers Casino, being the first player eliminated. On the very first hand of the day, Patel lost a coin flip to Travis Endersby, setting the tone for an action-packed final session.
Later in the day, Daniel Murphy pulled off a double elimination, knocking out Matthew Wakeman in 5th place and Oleg Ivanchenko in 4th place in a single hand. While Murphy’s play was aggressive, it wasn’t enough to threaten Obst’s commanding chip stack, which at one point swelled to nearly 200 big blinds.
As the game moved into three-handed play, the pace picked up, and Obst continued to build his stack. His lead was so large that his biggest challenge became moving his massive pile of chips when it came time for the heads-up round against Endersby.
The heads-up battle was brief, lasting just five hands. In the final hand, Obst’s ace-king went up against Endersby’s king-jack, and Obst sealed the win. The entire final day of the tournament wrapped up in just four and a half hours.
With this win, Obst not only claimed the top cash prize but also secured a $10,400 seat at the season-ending WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas.
