Julapun Amornvivat, Thailand’s deputy finance minister and a prominent member of the Pheu Thai Party, indicated that plans to legalize casinos are moving forward. He announced that a revised draft bill for regulating casino businesses would soon be presented to the cabinet for consideration among coalition partners.
The Pheu Thai Party envisions a flourishing ‘fun economy’ through the establishment of these entertainment complexes. “One of the ways to achieve this is by integrating legal casino and gambling businesses into the system,” the party stated. They propose a framework that ensures clear legal standards, oversight, and efficient tax collection.
These large-scale complexes would not only include casinos but also feature shopping malls, five-star hotels, restaurants, bars, convention centers, health facilities, sports venues, amusement parks, and cultural areas promoting Thai heritage. The Pheu Thai Party emphasizes that these complexes should be managed by “professional operators” with extensive experience in related sectors.
The party supports the establishment of a trustworthy gambling regulating body in order to lessen the possibility of societal problems brought on by gambling. They also suggest creating a specific fund to assist with programs aimed at mitigating the negative effects of gambling, such as rehabilitation and damages for impacted parties.
Thailand may attract more international tourists, according to the Pheu Thai Party, if integrated entertainment complexes are legalized and promoted. Significant job opportunities for Thai nationals and benefits to local businesses would result from this migration, which would boost the country’s tourism industry. The initial draft of the proposed bill stipulated that a minimum investment of THB 100 billion (about US$3.04 billion) would be needed for each entertainment complex.
