In its ongoing legal struggle against Light & Wonder (L&W) over claims of intellectual property infringement and trade secret misappropriation, Aristocrat Technologies was granted a preliminary injunction. The subject of contention is L&W’s online game, Dragon Train, which Aristocrat alleges was created with its confidential data.
Court Halts Dragon Train Commercialization
The case is being handled by U.S. District Court Judge Gloria M. Navarro in Nevada, and she has ordered L&W to stop selling, leasing, and commercializing Dragon Train. The court determined that L&W had unfairly benefited from an unfair competitive edge by using Aristocrat’s trade secrets to produce Dragon Train without having to make an equivalent expenditure in development.
The ruling emphasized that Aristocrat is “extremely likely to succeed” in proving L&W’s misappropriation of its trade secrets, marking a significant legal victory for the company. Matthew Primmer, Aristocrat’s Chief Product Officer, praised the court’s decision, stating, “We are extremely pleased with the court’s decision. This ruling underscores the value of our intellectual property and reaffirms our commitment to protecting the integrity of our business. We will continue to innovate and invest in cutting-edge solutions, knowing that the law protects our creative efforts.”
In response, Light & Wonder expressed disagreement with the court’s decision and announced plans to appeal. The company stated, “We respectfully disagree with the judge’s decision and will promptly file an appeal. We will continue to vigorously defend against Aristocrat’s claims, including presenting our defenses to a jury at a trial.”
Despite the legal setback, Light & Wonder remains optimistic about its financial outlook, reaffirming its 2025 target of $1.4 billion in consolidated AEBITDA. The company also highlighted ongoing initiatives to mitigate potential disruptions from the injunction, stating, “We expect continued strong growth across all our businesses.”
