Will GamProtect’s Shared View Safeguard Players or Compromise Privacy?

The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), the Gambling Commission (GC), the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), and significant gaming operators have joined forces to create GamProtect, which has formally transitioned from its pilot program to full deployment. The program, which attempts to balance privacy concerns with the protection of vulnerable clients, is designed to produce a “single-customer view” shared between participating operators.

One of the most important steps toward improved player safety is the establishment of a common customer profile among operators. Nonetheless, privacy issues have surfaced, with some individuals fearing that the system may violate personal information or be exploited for profit. In order to ensure that GDPR regulations are carefully followed when deciding which consumer information is shared, when it is shared, and with whom, the assistance of the ICO has been essential in resolving these concerns.

Operators like Flutter, Entain, bet365, and William Hill have been actively involved in GamProtect since April 2023, and the program was recently expanded to all operators. The initiative is expected to reduce the need for further mandatory player protection legislation, as it allows operators to proactively manage customer risk.

How GamProtect Works and Its Impact

GamProtect identifies at-risk players based on five key self-reported triggers, including self-admitted gambling addiction, ongoing treatment, potential harm to self or others, health conditions preventing safe gambling, or a personal decision to stop gambling due to addiction. Once flagged, operators share specific customer data—such as name, date of birth, and contact information—with GamProtect, enabling other operators to identify and, if necessary, close accounts associated with at-risk individuals.

GamProtect has reportedly already flagged 5,527 customers, of whom 88% have been matched by at least one operator and 66% by two or more, according to the Gambling Commission. By reducing the risks connected to gambling addiction, these initiatives hope to make the gaming environment safer for all participants.

GamProtect’s efficacy and the public’s reaction to the program will be keenly observed as additional operators sign up. Even while it seems to improve player safety, industry regulation and privacy are still major concerns.
