Gambling in Malaysia is heavily restricted, with the country allowing just one Las Vegas-style casino, which only those over 21 can enter. However, Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), an Islamic political party, is looking to end casino operations in line with its religious beliefs.
PAS Expands Influence and Pushes for Casino Closure
PAS has been gaining momentum, becoming Malaysia’s largest individual party following the 2022 general election, where it secured 43 out of 222 seats in the federal parliament. With control over four states, PAS is now setting its sights on shutting down Malaysia’s only casino, operated by Genting Bhd, a subsidiary of Genting Group, in Pahang. According to reports, the party plans to pursue this closure if it wins the upcoming 2028 Pahang state election.
Andansura Rabu, PAS’ deputy commissioner for Pahang, reiterated their anti-gambling stance: “Gambling is harmful, so we have to close it.” He emphasized the importance of adhering to the “laws and constitution” in implementing such a move.
The potential closure of Genting Bhd’s casino in Pahang could have significant economic repercussions. Malaysia currently benefits from over $1 billion in annual revenue generated by the casino. Shutting it down would lead to job losses and a sharp decline in revenue for the government. PAS continues to argue that the societal harm caused by gambling outweighs the financial benefits, as Rabu noted: “This isn’t a matter of religion, it’s a social issue.”
