Renewed Effort to Ban Smoking in Atlantic City Casinos Gains Momentum

The effort by legislators in Atlantic City to outlaw smoking at the casinos is back on the agenda. This time, Republican leaders in the New Jersey Assembly have stepped in to give their support, saying they are prepared to cast the required number of votes in the event the Democrats are unable to secure a majority. Bipartisan support for the effort has increased the chances of a vote more than before.

There has been a long-running campaign to ban smoking in casinos, with hearings conducted by Senate and Assembly committees. There hasn’t yet been a floor vote despite the conversations. This year, however, the Assembly’s proposed bill has 42 sponsors, 13 of whom are Republicans. This robust support from both parties may be essential to the bill’s advancement.

Republican Assembly Leader John DiMaio stressed that the issue is about safeguarding the health of casino workers, not politics. “We need legislative action, not excuses,” DiMaio said, highlighting how many employees have advocated for the ban for years.

Health Risks and Worker Advocacy

New Jersey’s 2006 smoking ban, which covers most workplaces, still allows casinos to permit smoking on up to 25% of their gaming floors. Casino workers and advocacy groups like Casino Employees Against Smoking Effects and the United Auto Workers have long argued that this exemption threatens the health of employees. A recent lawsuit attempting to end this exemption was dismissed, leaving legislation as the only path forward.

With support growing from both parties, the movement to ban smoking in Atlantic City casinos is gaining significant momentum. As Republicans join forces with Democrats, legislative action may finally bring long-awaited protections to casino workers.
