Maryland Casinos Report Record Gaming Revenue in August

The six privately held casinos in Maryland announced impressive total gaming revenue of $173.9 million in August 2024. This remarkable amount is the ninth-highest single-month revenue since the state’s casino program began in 2010, up 7.8% from the previous year. The increase demonstrates how popular Maryland’s casinos—which include Hollywood Casino Perryville, Ocean Downs Casino, MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort—are becoming.

Revenue Contributions and Trends

During August, casino gaming contributions to the state reached nearly $73.7 million, reflecting an 8.1% increase compared to August 2023. Of this amount, $53.1 million was directed to the Education Trust Fund, also marking an 8.1% rise year-over-year. This funding supports not only educational initiatives but also local communities, the horse racing industry, and small, minority- and women-owned businesses.

Among the casinos, MGM National Harbor, Live! Casino & Hotel, and Hollywood Casino reported year-over-year increases in revenue. MGM National Harbor led the way with over $75 million in revenue, an impressive 9.7% growth from the previous year. Live! Casino & Hotel also saw a significant rise, reporting $61.9 million for August 2024, up by $6.8 million compared to the same month last year. Hollywood Casino Perryville experienced an 8.7% increase, totaling $7.7 million.

However, with a tiny 6.9% reduction in revenue to just over $5 million, Rocky Gap Casino Resort had the biggest decline. In close pursuit, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore saw a 6.4% decline in revenue for the month, totaling $14.4 million. In August 2024, Ocean Downs Casino Resort brought in around $9.9 million, despite reporting a little 1.8% decrease.
