A complete measure totaling 146 pages has been presented by Ohio Senator Niraj Antani, R-Miami Township, with the goal of legalizing online casino gaming in the state. The law, which was presented on Wednesday, aims to provide Ohioans access to legal online gambling alternatives, including roulette, poker, table games, and slots. Although the bill’s official number is still pending, its goal is to grow the state’s gaming industry, which has seen substantial changes in recent years.
If the bill is approved, Ohioans will be able to access mobile apps and other forms of legal internet gaming offered by reputable casino operators.
Building on Ohio’s Gambling Success
In a press release, Antani emphasized that the legalization of iGaming is a natural progression for Ohio’s gaming market. He previously co-sponsored the bill that legalized sports betting in Ohio, which took effect on January 1, 2023. Additionally, a 2009 constitutional amendment allowed casinos in the state, paving the way for legal gambling.
“As gaming has evolved in our state and we’ve seen massive success with sports betting, it’s now time to legalize iGaming in Ohio,” Antani said. He noted that many Ohio residents lack easy access to physical casinos or racinos but should still have the opportunity to participate in online gaming. He added, “People should be free to gamble if they want.”
Antani stressed the importance of bringing online gambling out of the black market and into a regulated environment. “It’s time to bring iGaming out of the black market, and into the sunshine to provide it safely to all Ohioans,” he stated. The bill also includes measures to monitor players and address potential gambling problems.
However, the proposal has sparked concerns among organizations focused on gambling addiction. Derek Longmeier, executive director of the Problem Gambling Network of Ohio, highlighted the risks, referencing a survey that shows one in five Ohioans is at risk of developing a gambling issue. He also pointed to a spike in calls to their helpline following the introduction of sports betting.
Antani acknowledged these concerns and stated that part of the tax revenue would support programs to combat gambling addiction. The bill aims to ensure player protections while providing a new entertainment option for Ohioans.
