Struycken emphasized the need to safeguard young adults from gambling addiction. He pointed to existing regulations, such as limiting gambling ads to reach no more than 5% of consumers aged 18 to 24. Nevertheless, recent findings have raised doubts about the effectiveness of these measures. Struycken contested the De Groene Amsterdammer claim that 60% of gambling ads targeted young adults, asserting that the true figure was 19.2%, still within regulatory limits. He acknowledged the need for clearer and more consistent data to support well-informed regulatory decisions.
Legislative Moves and Broader Implications
The Dutch parliament has been active in addressing online gambling advertisements. A notable development was the passage of a motion by MP Michiel van Nispen earlier in 2024, proposing a complete ban on such ads. However, the government has yet to outline a timeline or strategy for this measure.
The Dutch government is looking into the wider societal effects of gambling, including its connections to poverty and suicide, in addition to its advertising. Struycken intends to investigate the relationship between gambling addiction and suicide rates by surveying problem and at-risk gamblers. By the middle of 2025, this research should be finished, and it will help with future regulatory decisions.
Struycken added, “To what extent gambling addiction leads to an increase in poverty is not known to me, and this connection cannot be made easily.” This statement highlights the challenge of drawing a clear connection between gambling addiction and rising poverty.
Despite the criticism, the Dutch government remains committed to evidence-based policymaking. Holland Casino has already begun implementing corrective measures. The forthcoming progress letter on online gambling and the results of the new research are anticipated to be crucial in shaping the future of gambling regulation in the Netherlands.
