Ciarán Carruthers, a veteran in the Macau casino industry, is set to step down from his role as CEO of Crown Resorts Ltd by the end of the year. Carruthers, who joined Crown Resorts in September 2022, led the company through a period of extensive transformation and remediation.
David Tsai, currently the president and chief operating officer at Crown Resorts, will take over as acting CEO starting September 1. Tsai will serve in this role until the company identifies a permanent successor.
In an official statement, Crown Resorts confirmed Carruthers’ departure. The statement acknowledged his leadership during a crucial phase, highlighting his role in navigating the company through regulatory challenges in Melbourne and Sydney. Carruthers also played a key role in advancing the transformation of Crown’s Perth property.
The company noted, “Mr. Carruthers steered the business through a period of significant transformation and remediation, culminating in Crown Melbourne and Sydney being deemed suitable by their respective state regulators while also progressing the Perth transformation programme.”
Carruthers decided that now is the right time for him to leave Crown Resorts. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made during his tenure. “It has been my privilege to lead the committed and talented team at Crown Resorts, but I feel now is an appropriate time after two and a half years of intensive transformation work to pursue other opportunities and interests,” Carruthers said. He also stated that he is pleased to leave behind a stronger and more compliant business for the next leader.
Crown Resorts’ chairman, John Borghetti, praised Carruthers’ contributions during his tenure. “It has been a privilege to work alongside Ciarán during this critical period of transformation and remediation, which has resulted in Crown retaining its licence to operate in both Victoria and New South Wales,” Borghetti said. He added that similar efforts for the Perth property are well underway.
Before joining Crown Resorts, Carruthers served as the chief operating officer at Wynn Macau, a prominent property of Macau casino operator Wynn Macau Ltd. He brought his extensive experience from the Macau gaming industry to Crown Resorts, guiding the company through challenging times.
With Carruthers’ departure, Crown Resorts enters a new chapter under the interim leadership of David Tsai. The search for a permanent CEO will continue as the company builds on the foundation laid during Carruthers’ tenure.
