John Bollom, President of Bacta, notes that the Gambling Commission and he have a similar vision for the future of low-stakes gaming entertainment and beachside arcades in the UK. He thinks that both sides have a “common agenda” for the growth of the sector.
Recently, Bollom joined a Bacta team that hosted key officials from the Gambling Commission at two significant venues: the Admiral Adult Gaming Centre in Southampton and Mumbles Pier in South Wales. Following these visits, Bollom reflected on the importance of showcasing the role these venues play in the local economy. He stated, “I was delighted to be able to show the senior team from the Commission around two contrasting venues both of which make significant contributions to the local economy and in the case of Mumbles Pier to regional tourism.”
Bollom emphasized how these venues employ local residents and offer entertainment to both locals and visitors, reinforcing their importance to the community. He also highlighted the alignment between Bacta and the Gambling Commission on key industry issues, particularly the implementation of recommendations from the recent White Paper, a document both organizations have diligently contributed to.
Industry’s Commitment to Responsibility and Economic Vitality
During the visits, supported by Novomatic’s Elizabeth Speed and Admiral’s Regional Operations Manager Neil Finch, the team underscored the economic significance of high street Adult Gaming Centres (AGCs). They demonstrated the high standards these establishments maintain in delivering safe and socially responsible experiences while contributing to the vitality of town centers.
At Mumbles Pier, Bollom pointed out the crucial role of its Family Entertainment Centre (FEC) Arcade in sustaining the historic structure. He noted, “Without the 100+ machines, the business model would no longer be viable,” emphasizing the arcade’s importance to the pier’s continued operation.
After the visits, Gambling Commission Chief Executive Andrew Rhodes shared his thoughts on LinkedIn, praising the productive time spent with industry stakeholders. “I carry out quite a few visits throughout the year and always try to get a few in during August,” he wrote. Rhodes expressed gratitude for the industry’s hospitality, acknowledging the disruption that comes with having visitors but appreciating the insight gained during the tour.
