Rounders fans have a renewed hope for a sequel. Matt Damon revealed this week that he and Edward Norton are still eager for a follow-up.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary last September, Rounders premiered in 1998. Initially, the film struggled with poor reviews and a disappointing opening weekend in the U.S. However, the movie’s fate changed dramatically after Damon’s appearance at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. Suddenly, Rounders gained massive popularity among poker fans worldwide. The demand for the DVD skyrocketed, contributing significantly to the poker boom of the early 2000s.
Over the years, rumors of a Rounders sequel have persisted. IMDb has long listed Rounders 2 as in development, dating back as far as 2013, and the writers claim they have had a script ready for a long time. In July 2021, writer Brian Koppelman fueled these rumors by posting a selfie with a Rounders 2 mug on his X account. Despite this, there had been little news on the sequel until Damon’s recent comments.
Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show last week, Damon was asked if he had ever received ideas for sequels to his films. He responded, “The one that we’ve been talking about for years, and I just saw Edward Norton a few weeks ago, all of us want to do it is a second Rounders movie, because so much has happened in that poker world in the last 25 years. It would be fun to catch up with those guys.”
Damon acknowledged the difficulties in making a sequel, noting that many parties would be involved. He mentioned that the writers had completed a script 10 to 15 years ago, but recent changes in the poker world would necessitate a new script.
While the sequel is not imminent, Damon’s comments offer a glimmer of hope for poker enthusiasts. In the meantime, if you liked Rounders check out this list of great movies that are similar to Rounders.
