On July 23, 2024, Isabelle Falque-Pierrotin, president of the ANJ, and Catherine Delorme, president of the Addiction Federation, formalized a partnership to bolster efforts against excessive gambling and safeguard minors. This collaboration aims to implement joint actions targeting these critical issues.
The Gaming Observatory’s 2019 report estimated 1.4 million at-risk gamblers, with nearly 400,000 facing pathological issues. Problem gambling contributes to over 38% of the sector’s revenue, with 21% from excessive gamblers alone. These alarming figures highlight the social impact, especially on youth, leading to over-indebtedness, family conflicts, and academic struggles.
In its 2024/2026 strategic plan, the ANJ prioritizes reducing the number of excessive gamblers and enhancing players’ ability to manage their gaming habits. This goal aligns with preventive actions against excessive gambling, supplementing public authority measures.
Collaborative Efforts
The ANJ’s strategy relies on scientific knowledge and stakeholder mobilization, particularly through partnerships with addiction experts. The Addiction Federation, France’s leading addictology network, represents 850 health establishments and services, including 500 professionals. It encompasses 80% of addiction treatment and prevention centers and 20% of health systems like addiction consultations and care teams.
The ANJ and Addiction Federation will collaborate on various initiatives:
- Studies and prevention support
- Developing tools for players and professionals
- Designing training programs
- Organizing joint events
They want to initiate collaborative training initiatives and provide a professional guide on gaming regulation in 2024. The goal of this collaboration is to offer helpful tools and assistance in order to treat gambling addiction in its entirety.
The Addiction Federation and ANJ’s combined activities represent a strong strategy for addressing gambling-related problems. Their approach centers on prevention, education, and support, with the goal of reducing the negative consequences of excessive gambling and safeguarding vulnerable groups, especially children.
By combining the knowledge and assets of both organizations, this collaboration represents a major step toward tackling the problems associated with gambling addiction in France and will foster a more secure and responsible gaming environment.
