IATSE Stands Against Times Square Casino, Supports Worker Rights

Numerous plans to open casinos in New York City have surfaced in recent months, generating a great deal of discussion and anxiety. The No Times Square Casino Coalition now includes the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and its New York Theater Locals. The Broadway League and a number of other groups are part of this alliance that is adamantly opposed to a casino in Times Square.

There are a few noteworthy suggestions available. A five-star casino resort in Hudson Yards has been proposed by Related Companies and Wynn Resorts. Saks Fifth Avenue is the proposed location of another upscale casino. Potential casinos at Yonkers Raceway, Hotel Pennsylvania, Midtown East, Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, Citi Field in Queens, and Coney Island are among the other bids.

Despite these various locations, the IATSE is clear in its opposition to the Times Square site. They emphasize the importance of labor standards in any casino development. “While the ultimate decision rests with Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York state legislature, any casino development must uphold the highest labor standards. This includes ensuring workers are provided the chance to democratically elect union representation without interference, providing workers with adequate wages and benefits, and negotiating in good faith with unions.”

Impact on Broadway and Theater District

The IATSE represents over 168,000 technicians, artisans, and craftspersons in the entertainment industry. The union has committed to working with casino management regardless of which proposal is selected. However, they stress that the theater district and Broadway are still recovering from the financial impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Our iconic theater district and Broadway are still recovering from the financial hardship brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic. There are over a dozen viable proposals other than the Times Square location that would result in new entertainment venues and more jobs without compromising the theater district and surrounding businesses.”

The decision on which proposal will be accepted is still pending. Companies are navigating the permit process in the New York City area, with some officials predicting a resolution could come by late 2025. As the debate continues, the IATSE and its allies remain vocal in their opposition to a Times Square casino.
