Churchill Downs Incorporated (CDI), renowned for its pari-mutuel horse racing and casino gambling, has unveiled plans for a significant renovation at the Churchill Downs Racetrack. This new project focuses on overhauling the Grandstand Club and Pavilion, marking another ambitious step in enhancing the iconic venue.
On Wednesday, CDI detailed its plans to invest between $80 million and $90 million into the Grandstand Club and Pavilion. This announcement follows a recent $200 million renovation, completed just in time for the 150th Kentucky Derby. The upcoming transformation aims to modernize the racetrack and elevate the spectator experience in time for the 151st Kentucky Derby scheduled for May 2025.
Mike Anderson, President of Churchill Downs, emphasized the significance of these upgrades. He stated, “Like all of our recent enhancements at Churchill Downs, the renovation of the grandstands represents our commitment to providing unique guest seating options while honoring the historic significance of the property in order to achieve a world-class sports and entertainment experience for our guests.”
Enhancements to Seating and Amenities
The renovation will introduce approximately 8,300 new, comfortable seats, replacing the current aluminum bleachers. The Grandstand Club’s seating will include uncovered stadium-style options and exclusive “trackside” seats for an unparalleled view of the race.
The first floor of the Grandstand Club will feature upgraded betting windows, bars, and permanent concessions. On the second floor, an outdoor garden will be created, complete with additional betting windows, bars, and dining spaces. This level will also offer an open-air balcony for a more relaxed atmosphere.
Moreover, the third floor will see improvements to the box seats, which accommodate 2,800 guests. The updated area will boast new amenities, ensuring a premium experience for all visitors.
CDI’s latest investment underscores its commitment to delivering an exceptional experience at Churchill Downs, blending modern amenities with the venue’s rich history. The Grandstand renovation will not only enhance comfort but also continue to celebrate the storied tradition of one of horse racing’s most esteemed tracks.
