The Mirage Bids Farewell After 34 Years on the Las Vegas Strip

The Mirage Hotel and Casino bid farewell to its 34-year legacy on the Las Vegas strip with a poignant closing ceremony on July 17, marking the end of an era in Sin City. Amidst a cascade of memories and tributes, The Mirage Hotel and Casino closed its doors for the last time after a storied 34-year tenure on the bustling Las Vegas strip.

The closure ceremony, attended by prominent figures from Las Vegas’s gaming and hospitality sectors, including Mirage President Joe Lupo and Hard Rock International Chairman and Seminole Gaming CEO Jim Allen, was a solemn affair.

Reflecting on The Mirage’s Legacy

“It’s a historic day for the city,” remarked Joe Lupo ahead of the ceremony. “We’re paying tribute not only to our leaders but also to the employees who have been instrumental over the past 34 years.”

Lupo expressed optimism for the future, as Hard Rock International prepares to breathe new life into the iconic location by 2027. The acquisition from MGM Resorts in 2022 for $1.075 billion set the stage for a transformative redevelopment, highlighted by plans for a striking 700-ft guitar-shaped hotel at the heart of the strip.

During the closure period, Hard Rock International ensured that all eligible union and non-union employees received substantial severance packages totaling $80 million. “This closure is a humbling experience,” acknowledged Jim Allen during the ceremony. “Our $80 million commitment reflects our deep appreciation for our departing employees.”

Elaine Wynn, co-founder of Wynn Resorts, reflected on The Mirage’s inception, praising architect Roger Thomas for crafting a visionary destination that redefined Las Vegas entertainment.

“The Mirage was more than just a casino,” Wynn recalled. “It was a paradise of gardens, dolphins, and the iconic volcano—a testament to Roger Thomas’s imagination.”

The ceremony also featured Jan Jones Blackhurst, Las Vegas’s first female mayor, who celebrated The Mirage’s role in transforming the city into a global hospitality leader.

“The Mirage changed everything,” Blackhurst affirmed. “It showed us the heights Las Vegas could achieve. It paved the way for our city’s boundless ambition.” With its final closure at 11am local time, The Mirage leaves behind a rich legacy cherished by locals and visitors alike. The event concluded with heartfelt tributes from Lupo and Allen, honoring the property’s enduring beauty and impact on Las Vegas.
