Siân Griffiths will take up her new position as Chair of GambleAware on July 18. Griffiths has a plethora of expertise to this role, having headed the performance and delivery committee and functioned as deputy chair. She has previously chaired the global health committee of Public Health England and served as a non-executive director of Public Health Wales.
Griffiths’s background in public health is impressive. She became the first director of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care at the Chinese University of Hong Kong after serving as chair of the government’s SARS investigation in 2003.
Continuing the Mission
Expressing her enthusiasm for her new role, Griffiths stated, “I am delighted to accept this appointment and to continue working with GambleAware to ensure gambling harms are viewed as a serious public health issue. GambleAware’s independence from the industry remains paramount and is demonstrated across all areas of the charity’s work. I look forward to continuing these efforts with my public health colleagues and experts within the GambleAware board as we transition to a new statutory funding model.”
Griffiths will be succeeding Baroness Kate Lampard, who has served as chair since 2016. Lampard is stepping down to lead the Lampard Inquiry, investigating mental health in-patient deaths in Essex. Throughout her tenure, Lampard was a prominent advocate for an industry statutory levy to replace the voluntary funding system, a recommendation supported by the government in the Gambling Act white paper.
Under Lampard’s leadership, the charity expanded its efforts to address gambling harms. This included collaborations with the government, NHS, and other third-sector organizations through the recommissioning of the National Gambling Support Network. Reflecting on her time at GambleAware, Lampard said, “I’m pleased to be succeeded by Siân and to be leaving the charity in such safe hands. I am proud of what we have achieved and it has been a pleasure to see how the charity and wider gambling harms system has grown over the past eight years. I wish GambleAware and Siân all the best for the future.”
