Newly released data from Maryland indicates that the state’s casinos amassed $162.9 million in revenue for June. MGM National Harbor led the market among the state’s six casino sites.
The revenue for June 2024 shows a slight decline of 0.5%, or $802,798, compared to June 2023. Despite this minor drop, casino gaming contributions to the state rose by 0.6% year-over-year, totaling $69.8 million.
Among the six operational casinos, MGM National Harbor generated the highest revenue. Following closely were Live! Casino & Hotel, Horseshoe Casino, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino, and Rocky Gap Casino. The revenue from these casinos is also invested in local communities and the Education Trust Fund, which received $50.3 million in June. This contribution reflects a small decrease of 0.1% from the previous year.
Comparison with Previous Months
In May, Maryland’s casinos reported slightly higher revenue, totaling $173.2 million. Additionally, the sports wagering handle for May reached $431.5 million, marking a significant 34.8% increase year-over-year.
Although iGaming remains illegal in Maryland, legislators and labor unions successfully opposed a bill in March that aimed to introduce online gaming. However, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) recently granted the Veterans Services Corporation (VSC) and its partner Bee-Fee a mobile sports betting license. This approval increases the state’s number of mobile sportsbooks to 12, alongside 12 retail locations.
With the addition of new mobile sportsbooks and the steady performance of its casinos, Maryland’s gaming market is poised for continued growth in the latter half of 2024. The state’s focus on local community investments and educational funding through casino revenue underscores its commitment to leveraging gaming for broader societal benefits.
