Shiina Okamoto from Japan Wins 2024 WSOP Ladies Event

Japanese poker player Shiina Okamoto has won the 2024 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Ladies Event, defeating 1,245 participants. This victory comes a year after she finished second in the same tournament.

In the 2023 WSOP $1,000 ladies no-limit hold’em championship, Okamoto finished as the runner-up. Determined to succeed this year, she posted on social media at the start of the 2024 event, saying, “I want to retrieve the things I left behind last year.”

Okamoto achieved her goal by defeating Jamie Kerstetter, a two-time WSOP Circuit ring winner and poker commentator, in the final showdown. She secured the top prize of $171,732.

Speaking through Naoya Kihara, the first Japanese bracelet winner, Okamoto shared her thoughts with reporters. She admitted that when she made the social media post, she didn’t fully believe it was possible. However, by the end of day two, with a large stack of chips, she began to see victory within reach.

Okamoto’s win has significantly boosted her tournament earnings to $408,567, with the majority coming from her WSOP performances.

The tournament spanned four days, and the money bubble burst late on the second day, allowing 187 players to share the $1,095,600 prize pool. Many notable players made deep runs, including poker media member Alexandra Loveless (34th place), two-time WSOPC ring winner Kasey Lyn Mills (31st place), Jennifer Shahade (27th place), Robyn Alvis (27th place), Monika Zukowicz (22nd place), Nadya Magnus (19th place), Cherish Andrews (16th place), and 2023 European Poker Tour Prague final tablist Marle Spragg (11th place).
