Chris Hunichen, a well-known online poker player, secured his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet and a $2,838,389 prize. He was the last man standing in a field of 112 players in the $100,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event, marking the biggest win of his career.
During a tense three-handed phase, Hunichen faced potential elimination. With his pocket fives up against Jeremy Ausmus’s Ace-Jack, Hunichen was at risk when an ace appeared on the turn. Yet, a five on the river saved him, giving him a set and a vital chip boost. After many dramatic moments, Hunichen emerged victorious, achieving his first WSOP gold bracelet.
This win significantly boosted Hunichen’s live tournament earnings to nearly $16 million. The 39-year-old from Clayton, North Carolina, has also accumulated substantial earnings online over almost two decades.
“It has been tough. One of the hardest years of my life, with my Dad passing,” Hunichen shared. “He was my biggest fan, he supported me from the beginning.”
Feeling confident about his win, he added, “It felt destined. I really felt like I was gonna win this one. Some of my friends flew in from all over the world to be here for me for this moment. I can’t let them down.”
The event attracted 112 participants, creating a $10,836,000 prize pool. The top 17 finishers cashed in, including notable players like Sergio Aido (16th), Nick Petrangelo (13th), Andrew Lichtenberger (12th), Justin Bonomo (10th), Isaac Haxton (8th), Viktor Blom (3rd) and Jeremy Ausmus (2nd).
