James Obst has won his second World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet after stepping away from poker in 2019 to pursue professional tennis. The Australian player took home the 2024 WSOP $10,000 seven card stud championship, earning $260,658 and adding to his impressive tournament record.
Obst, who paused his poker career at 28 to chase his dream of competing at Wimbledon, made a successful return to the poker scene. He bested 107 top players, including a challenging heads-up match against Paul Volpe, to claim the title.
Reflecting on his win, Obst said, “A little bit overwhelming. Very strung out. It’s been a long couple of days. I can’t really believe it just thinking about the week that I’ve had. To be here with a bracelet is surreal. It’s unreal.”
Heads-up for the title started with Obst having a chip lead of 3,535,000 against three-time bracelet winner Paul Volpe’s 2,890,000. As the night progressed, Obst extended his lead. One of the final hands saw Obst with kings up, leaving Volpe with very few chips as the clock neared 3:00 AM.
In the final hand, Volpe went all-in with three cards to a flush against Obst’s split pair of fours. Volpe failed to complete his flush or make a higher pair, ending his run in second place with $173,391. This finish brings Volpe’s total recorded tournament earnings to nearly $9.9 million across 292 in-the-money finishes.
