The Catawba Nation recently commenced construction on the ambitious $700 million-plus Catawba Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, just 35 minutes from Charlotte. The groundbreaking event saw participation from Catawba Nation Chief Brian Harris, other tribal leaders, local government officials, and partner companies. Attendees, including 400 tribal members, enjoyed cultural performances by Catawba dancers and drummers.
Chief Harris remarked, “This groundbreaking represents not just the physical construction of a building, but the realization of a dream, the embodiment of hard work and dedication, and the celebration of our rich cultural heritage.”
Economic Growth Rooted in Tradition
The development of the Catawba Two Kings Casino is hailed as a significant milestone for both the Catawba Nation and the residents of Cleveland County and Kings Mountain. Officials emphasized the project’s potential to foster economic growth while remaining deeply rooted in the tribe’s traditions and values.
Harris highlighted the importance of this project, stating, “For too long, the Catawba Indian Nation has faced challenges and barriers to economic development. But today, we are breaking ground not just on a casino, but on a path toward empowerment and self-determination.” He added, “[The casino will also serve as a] source of pride and cultural preservation – a place where our heritage is celebrated, where our traditions are honored, and where our stories are told.”
The project, designed by architects Alliance of Toronto, will replace the 21-story Oakes Hotel with a pair of 58-story towers at 6546 Fallsview Boulevard. These minimalist towers will stand 210.05 meters tall and include 1,140 hotel suites and 126 residential units. The complex will feature a six-story podium with a three-story atrium, restaurants, a gaming facility, a spa, fitness center, and a pool.
Currently, the Catawba Nation operates a temporary casino opened in 2021, offering 1,000 slot machines, electronic table games, a retail sportsbook, and a restaurant. The permanent casino resort will be completed in two main phases. The first phase will include 1,350 slots, 12 table games, and a 40-seat restaurant with a sportsbook area. The second phase will add a 400-room hotel and additional casino amenities.
Construction has started on necessary infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the Dixon School Road Bridge and new sewer lines. Yates-Metcon will serve as the general contractor, and Delaware North will manage the resort once contracts are approved. The resort aims to employ around 2,200 team members upon full completion.
