Safer Gambling Week 2023 Focuses on Use of Responsible Betting Tools

The seventh edition of Safer Gambling Week, which takes place every year, took place from November 13–19, 2023. The effort, which is being spearheaded by the Bingo Association, the British Amusement Catering Trade Association (Bacta), and the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), intends to encourage ethical betting practices in the sector.

The BGC has revealed fresh statistics that shows a notable rise in the usage of responsible gambling tools during Safer Gambling Week 2023, building on the success of recent years. The amount of deposit caps that players established increased by 18% annually. Furthermore, there was a 300% rise in the use of maximum stake limitations and a 300% increase in the number of players establishing reality checks. Remarkably, 83,242 distinct account holders established deposit limits—a 12.5% rise over the prior year.

The BGC also emphasized the powerful role of social media in driving engagement. Activity across platforms such as X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram generated over 50 million impressions. Messaging related to Safer Gambling Week appeared nearly 30 million times on major social media sites, representing a 70% increase in visibility.

Broad Support and Future Goals

BGC CEO and interim chair Michael Dugher commended the sector for its joint efforts during the program. Many different stakeholders, such as bookmakers, casinos, bingo clubs, amusement arcades, and internet gambling companies, support Safer Gambling Week. Charities, legislators, peers, and sports teams also lend their support to the event; in 2023, Premier League teams West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion will be advocating the cause.

Reflecting on the event’s success, Dugher expressed optimism for continued progress: “These new figures show Safer Gambling Week continues to be a powerful advert for increasing use of safer gambling tools in the regulated industry,” he said. He highlighted the industry’s commitment to promoting safer gambling tools year-round and contrasted this with the unregulated online gambling market, which offers no such support.

Dugher emphasized the importance of a dedicated week that unites the entire sector, with strong backing from cross-party MPs, the government, and the independent regulator, the Gambling Commission. “The record numbers for both impressions and use of safer gambling tools show the industry has never been more committed to ensuring the many millions who enjoy a regular flutter continue to do so in a safe and responsible environment,” he added.

Looking ahead, Safer Gambling Week 2024 is scheduled to take place from November 18-24, with the BGC aiming to build on the momentum and success of this year’s event.
