Malcolm Trayner Wins First WSOP Bracelet and $1,000,000 in Event #5: $1,000 Mystery Millions

Australian poker player Malcolm Trayner claimed his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet by winning Event #5: $1,000 Mystery Millions. He walked away with an impressive $1,000,000 after outlasting a massive field of 18,409 participants. The final heads-up battle saw Trayner defeat Carson Richards, who earned $536,080 for his second-place finish.

Starting the heads-up play, Trayner had a significant chip lead over Richards with a 3.5:1 advantage. However, Richards quickly doubled up with a 7-6 suited against Trayner’s A-K, hitting a flush on the river. This briefly gave Richards the chip lead, but Trayner soon regained his advantage.

In the final hand, Trayner limped from the button with K♢J♡. Richards pushed all-in with Q♠10♡ for 16 big blinds, and Trayner called. The board ran 6♣5♣3♣K♡A♡, giving Trayner the victory.

The Mystery Millions event generated a record-breaking prize pool of $16,199,920, making it the largest in its history.

Reflecting on his win, Trayner expressed his mixed emotions. “A bit of mix, everything. Lots of excitement. Overwhelmed. I just I can’t believe what’s happened. A lot of happiness as well,” he said.

At 24, Trayner was asked about how he maintained his composure. He admitted to feeling nervous initially and making a few mistakes, but soon settled into his game. “Once I got used to it and settled, then it was just a matter of doing what I’ve done a few times or many times before, online and live as well. Just playing final table and just try to disassociate from the money and just think about the chips you have in front of you and just trying to win everyone else’s chips. That was my goal,” Trayner explained.

When asked about his plans for the prize money, Trayner mentioned a celebratory dinner. “Have a nice dinner. Get out all the boys. A really nice treat and I have no idea what to do next. Apart from a nice dinner and maybe fly my girlfriend to business class or something,” he shared.

This victory propelled Trayner from 170th to 35th on Australia’s All-Time Money List, more than doubling his lifetime tournament earnings. Remarkably, this was Trayner’s first WSOP event, and he secured a bracelet on his debut – an achievement few can claim.
