Catawba Tribe to Commence Construction on $700M Casino in North Carolina

Plans to begin construction of a $700 million casino near Kings Mountain, North Carolina, were revealed by the Catawba Indian Tribe. There will be a groundbreaking ceremony on June 7 to officially start construction.

This new casino project, which is 35 miles south of Charlotte, is expected to generate around 2,000 employment. At the location, the tribe now runs a transient casino, but this new venture represents a substantial increase.

Early in 2026, tribal representatives want to launch the first phase of the permanent Catawba Two Kings Casino Resort. 1,350 slot machines, 12 table games, electronic table games, and a 40-seat restaurant with a sportsbook section will all be included in this first phase of the casino.

Overcoming Legal Hurdles

Once a disagreement with their previous developer, SkyBoat Gaming, was resolved in early May, the Catawba Tribe was able to go on with the project. The ground lease for the tribe’s trust lands was handled by the settlement.

The National Indian Gaming Commission concluded in 2022 that there had been a federal law violation in the original deal with SkyBoat Gaming. The initiative, which is meant to help the 3,000 members of the tribe, was deemed to have too much influence by the commission by SkyBoat Gaming.

Casino

With the latest arrangement, SkyBoat Gaming is no longer associated with the casino. Before, the tribe received help from SkyBoat Gaming to purchase 17 acres in Kings Mountain and put them into a land trust for the project.
